Romanija

Romanija: A Haven for Adventure and Nature

Location and Geography

Romanija is located southwest of Sokolac, northeast of Pale, and east of Sarajevo. The highest peak is Veliki Lupoglav, with an altitude of 1,652 meters. A recognizable feature of Romanija is its large rocky barrier, with distinct sections named Flat Rock, Eagle Rock, Red Rock, Black Rock, Đeva Rock (Girl's Rock), and Great Rock. On the west side are the Crvene Stijene (Red Rocks), selected as the site for the "Enjoy Sarajevo - Romanija Region" project.

Via Ferrata "Sokolov Put" - An Iron Road to Adventure

A via ferrata, meaning "iron road," leads to the top of Crvena Stijena (1,423 meters), located in the western part of the Romanija mountain range, between Ravna Romanija and Pale. The Via Ferrata "Sokolov Put" was built and opened to visitors—sports climbers and adventurers—in the second half of 2020. It has quickly become one of the most popular via ferratas in this part of Europe, attracting over 3,000 climbers, all of whom have left with great impressions.

Via Ferrata "Sokolov Put" is a secured hiking trail on the rocks, equipped with steel aids. It is suitable for everyone, including those without previous mountaineering experience. The length of the trail is 350 meters and includes two suspension bridges, making it a unique attraction in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This adrenaline-filled experience offers great excitement for fans of adventure and extreme sports, all with maximum safety.

To use the ferrata, it is necessary to have the proper equipment, known as a ferrata set, and the use of the ferrata is not recommended in winter conditions.

The Second Ferrata at Crna Stijena

The second ferrata, located at the Crna Stijena (Black Rock) site, is more difficult and demanding. This site has been proposed to be declared a nature park. The ferrata begins at 1,350 meters above sea level, with an exit at 1,550 meters above sea level, marking a 200-meter altitude difference. The length of this ferrata trail is 350 meters.

Hiking and Mountaineering Trails

As part of the "Enjoy Sarajevo - Romanija Region" project, 45 km of hiking and mountaineering trails have been marked. These trails stretch from the Orlovača Cave to Novak's Cave and the Stajna mountain lodge, continuing to Crvene Stijene and Crna Stijena. Along the trails, tourist signs, benches, and lookouts have been set up, and a paragliding airfield has been arranged, enhancing the tourist offerings for both mountaineers and those seeking adrenaline-filled experiences.

Natural Riches of Romanija

Romanija is known for its variety of medicinal herbs and other forest fruits. It is a popular destination for hunters and sport fishing enthusiasts, who can enjoy the beautiful Bioštica River, rich with numerous sources of drinking water.

Mountain Lodges

There are two mountain lodges in Romanija: "Crvene Stijene" and "Stajna." These lodges are managed by mountaineering associations from the area—"Glasinac Sokolac" and "Romanija" from Pale.
